Legendary rock club reunion in aid of the Bradford burns unit and Marie Curie cancer trust

On 11th May, 2010 it will be the 25th anniversary of the tragic Bradford City fire. To commemorate this, a charity evening is being held at The Gasworks rock club on Ivegate, Bradford on Saturday 29th May.

The event will be a reunion of staff and customers who used to frequent the Frog and Toad rock club which closed down 20 years ago this year. DJs Lloyd Spencer, Beastie and Phil Kirk will be recapturing the atmosphere by playing pre-90's rock and metal from classic rock to thrash metal.

Entry will be just £3 and will run from 8pm till 3am. Please get along and show your support for this. It promises to be a cracking night and it is all for a very worthy cause, which is obviously very close to a lot of people's hearts.

A Facebook group has been set up where people can discuss what songs they would like to hear as well as any other ideas.

Summer's here and the time is right!

As summer approaches, things really seem to be taking off for music more and more in our fair city and despite the recent ongoing economic struggles not just for the licensed trade but for everybody, most of our pubs and venues still survive in the face of adversity. Here are a few details of just some of what is going on.

Despite recent rumours of closure, the Exchange bar continues on and a recent change in management has seen an upturn in trade and quality. The new manager Danny has injected a new lease of life and enthusiasm into the place, hosting more live music and DJ nights of varying styles. The bar itself and the premises in general is reportedly a cleaner and more pleasant place to visit. So if you haven't popped in for a while or shyed away from the place in recent times, it is well worth revisiting. Danny is a nice guys and a great host!

After a run of management and name changes in recent times, Delius is now back and open for business. The new manager Steve is very keen to get things moving as quickly as possible with live music and is trying his very best to restore the classic Delius indie / alternative atmosphere. He is a really friendly and enthusiastic guy and is currently on the lookout for bands of all kinds and would like to welcome customers, new and old so bands, please get in touch if you are interested in playing and if you haven't ventured up there for a while, then do call in and say hello.

The Mannville Arms has continued on and has been open for business since last November under the new management of Steve and Jade. It continues to be a great independent pub with live music every Saturday, DJs, very reasonable beer prices and drinks offers and food throughout the day. As has been tradition in recent times, it will also play host to various charity events throughout the summer including Standfest II on the 2nd of May. Stev and Jade are always on the lookout for new bands and ideas for events and would like to welcome customers new and old to The Mannville Arms.

Rafters has in recent times established itself as a fantastic independent music and arts pub under the management of Fran Baggio who sadly left the fold a couple of months ago. However, it recently reopened again under the new management team of Steve, Chris Aimee, Cairan and Jo and they are trying their very best to retain the attitude and atmosphere of the place, continuing the jams sessions and live music and DJ nights. At the time of writing the future of the pub is unclear but in the mean time, there are plenty of events and nights for everyone to enjoy!

The Polish Parish club still continues on, hosting a number of DJ/club nights and still running one of the cheapest and most varied bars in town. The club is a great place to call in for a drink and they are always on the lookout for new events.

Bradford Playhouse opened late last year and has really hit town in a big way, hosting a plethora of live and club nights to suit all tastes and it seems to have created quite a stir amongst the local alternative community. Unfortunately, we have yet to visit ourselves but when we do, will be doing a proper report on it as well as getting the venue properly included on the BMC website. Playhouse send us probably more updates than everybody else at the moment and we shall endeavour to make more of an effort to give them more coverage.

The Zuu bar has been undergoing a few recent changes and after a few setbacks and false starts, this May sees the launch of Zuu 2 - a brand new 450 capacity venue situated the floor above the Zuu bar. Zuu 2 will play host to a wave of brand new exciting regular club nights to suit lots of tastes and also some slightly higher profile gigs. The Zuu bar will be hosting a number of regular outside promotions, providing more specialised nights from indie to rock, goth, punk and metal as well as some more off the wall nights which we are very excited about! There will be a seperate article covering all of the new Zuu & Zuu 2 nights.

Situated on the floor below the Zuu bar, the Empress Alehouse opened for business a couple of months ago under the management of Steve Malley, who many of you may remember from the Exchange bar in years gone by. The Empress plays host to regular and varied rock DJ nights every Friday and Saturday and is a great place to call in for a pint any time of the week, Monday to Saturday.

The Black Swan continues to thrive under the management of Billy Dunn and plays host to weekly DJ nights and jam nights as well as monthly live gigs. Amongst the most popular nights down there however, seem to be the darts nights every Thursday.

Bradford Rio's continues to gather pace too with some fantastic live music and club nights every Friday and Saturday and makes a great destination for a night out as well as a brilliant sounding venue for bands. With the calibre of music they are hosting, Bradford Rio's looks set to go from strength to strength.

So that's 10 different bars! Also worthy mentions go out to The Beehive, The 1 in 12 Club, The Love Apple, The City Vaults, The Gasworks and also Bradford University, who are once again hosting the annual Infest goth/industrial/electro festival in their brand new venues which are set to be unveiled this summer. So please support your local venues. There are so many different places to explore in this city and so much cool music. You have a fantastic scene right on your doorstep so make the most of it and with the weather improving, there seems like no better time to do it than now!

Bradford Music Collective moving forward

Hi all,

You may have noticed that updates have been a bit thin on the ground in the last month or so. Our apologies for this to both readers and the venues who have sent us updates. We are currently undergoing a rethink of the Bradford Music Collective and are returning in the spring with a completely revamped website and a fresh outlook. A lot has changed in Bradford in recent times as regards venues and promoters and there is so much happening. These are exciting times for our city and we want to improve things at our end to let you know about as much as possible. We are intending to hold better meetings with all of the venues in the city to make sure our information is up to date and also redefine our team and approach to ensure that the BMC remains as impartial as possible. One of the primary directives of the BMC originally was to try and keep politics and differences out of the organisation as much as we can and being only human, we hold our hands up to perhaps not always succeeding in this at times. We are working hard to change this, so whatever venue, pub or promoter you might represent, please do keep sending us information and we shall be making efforts to arrange meetings with each of you in the coming weeks. If anyone wants to get involved in gathering information, photos or articles for the new website, then please do get involved. As they say, the more the merrier! Any questions, then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Stanfest II - The Mannville Arms 02/05/10

In the early part of 2009, our dear old friend William "Stan" Simpson was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer. He had been sick for some time. Shortly after his diagnosis, he was admitted to Manorlands hospice where he received sterling care from the staff. Stanfest was organised around about this time so we could have one last blast in his honour and raise some money for Manorlands, which is a charity run organisation. The date for Stanfest was 3rd May 2009. We discussed the event and Stan handpicked a few of the bands for the day himself. Although he was in his 70's, he was a keen gig-goer and he loved live music and up until his illness could often party harder than a lot of people even a third of his age. The original intention was for Stan to be there but his health had deteriorated too much in the days running up to the event.

Stan passed away on the morning of Stanfest itself, which made the day all the more poignant. Many many people attended and we all raised a tearful glass in rememberance to our Stan whilst we saw some of his favourite bands rock the house. The Mannville Arms was positively overflowing with people coming to pay their respects and everybody made it a day to remember for a special man who we will never forget.

I never intended for it to be any more than that one event as I wanted it to be a single special day. However, I received an overwhelming number of messages saying that we should make it an annual thing. Even up until very recently, I was unsure about doing it again but in the end I thought why not.

This is a Facebook / social group which has been set up for Rockers that live in Bradford and the surrounding areas. The group have regular get togethers - from 2010, these will take place on the last Friday of each month at The Black Swan, Thornton Road, where there will be live music and / or DJs. It's a great way to meet people with common interests and have a good chat about Metal, Rock, Punk & Indie and listen to good music. Everybody is welcome no matter what age (well 18+ obviously) and entry will always be free.

5 Questions December edition: DJ Hollie "Poprocks" Robson

Hi Hollie and welcome to the first instalment of our 5 questions feature. Thanks for agreeing to take part. We have had a few contributions from people (some more sensible than others) but here are the ones I have picked.

Before we kick off with the questions, can I please just ask you to tell us a bit about yourself (what you do, what you have done etc.)?

Hi, I'm Hollie Robson - I've been DJing for about 2 years, I learnt from a friend- James Boland how to. I started DJing at Revolution for a rock night called Carnage then moved on to chart and cheese Wednesdays and Fridays. I worked at the Boxx DJing indie then moved to the Gasworks doing student Thursdays and classic rock Saturdays. Now I'm at Rio's doing metal Fridays and student Wednesdays, I love DJing, it's the most fun job I've had and I do see it as a big achievement when I've done nights that are packed with hundreds of people or private parties where people are having a great night and loving the music.

Ok so the first of our questions is from Tom Marshall (Cypher / Gasworks / Mannville).

"Why the name DJ Poprocks?"

I wanted something catchy that people will recognise. The main music I DJ is Rock and Pop so that comes into it and an idea I had was giving out sweets when people made requests but it's quite hard finding popping candy these days. You hear from people a lot that it's a rare thing to see a female DJ in such a male oriented industry - it's nice when I hear supportive comments.

The second question comes from Rob 'Screwball' Holmes.

"What's the strangest song request you've ever had?"

"Head, shoulders, knees and toes" before I knew it was a new release lol.I thought someone was asking for some children's song - it left me confused till I updated my music :D

Next up is a light-hearted one from Matthew Wade (Sounds Of Swami).

"Do the bodies really have to hit the floor? AGAIN?"

Hell yeah they do! No matter what clubs I've DJ'd this song is a guaranteed floor-filler. If the people request it it must be good, I'm the same on a night off even if I've heard it 1000 times I'll still dance.

"Do you think that the Bradford music scene is dying?"

The Bradford music scene, when you compare to Leeds music scene is lacking. The main live venues with stages usually have tribute bands on instead of new, creative, artists. This years Bradford Music week showed the city has talent to be showcased. Clubs like Gasworks and Zuu bar are the perfect place for such live acts. There is no reason why the Bradford music scene cannot grow and get back on the music map, with some serious consideration and the right people at the reins, Bradford will once again be the place to come for such influential artists.

And finally one from myself (a two part question I guess)

"When you are not DJing yourself and on a night out, what qualities do you most notice in other DJs? And who is your personal favourite local DJ?"

I love seeing energetic DJ's who really get the crowd going, I really respect vinyl DJ's as it is such a difficult skill to learn but even if your a beginner, simply playing one song then the next if you build the atmosphere with the right song choice and get involved with the crowd on the mic taking time to talk and take requests- you are a great DJ, it's all about making sure the crowd are enjoying it.

It's hard to pick just one DJ as there are a lot in Bradford I think are amazing but Tim Prudames (Raetones16) has been practising for years, promoting himself, teaching others and sticking at it and is now doing big things as he is really talented, yet he is still the same person, it hasn't gone to his head and still has the time to help others, I really respect him for all this.

Open session to make a Winter Solstice visual, sound, and performance installation

Please come down on Friday anytime between 10am and 6pm; with performance and celebrations from 8pm.

The installation will centre around as many star-shaped lanterns as we can make. We will also have some musicians, poets, dancers, and more, around and about to record sound and poetry, and encourage writing and movement.

Please come and do as much or as little, with as many or few ideas, as you like. Bring along anything extra materials, instruments etc you may like to work with; this is an open one day project.

Chiaroscuro presents Longest Night
7pm - 10pm (Downstairs Bar) // FREE

The Playhouse's resident dance company Chiaroscuro presents work-in-progress (working title: "Longest Night") in the wonderful auditorium.

The piece is about surviving a storm together, coming together when darkness threatens. Getting through the longest night in the dark of winter by pulling together as a community. There will be a video projection to go with this live dance.

In addition an installation called 'Park' in the downstairs bar will be hiding away under the stairs for all who venture to find it.

Zuu Bar News

Last Saturday, we passed our first month's trading under the new team at the Zuu Bar. Obviously with it being such a swift transition from the old venue, there have been a few teething issues and a lot of developments in a short space of time. Our first priority was to just get the place open and trading in the first instance, as well as to transfer as many bookings as we could over from our existing gig list, whilst honouring the few bookings that were already part of the Zuu Bar calender, booked under the old management.

With this in mind then, there have been some inconsistencies with opening times and door admission charges which have been compounded by us getting used to moving from a public house environment to a venue / club environment. We apologise for this but are pleased to announce the following changes, which should hopefully make The Zuu Bar the most varied and happening place in town!

Starting this week (w/c 7th December), the Zuu Bar is now open 5 days a week. We are open from 5pm every Tuesday to Saturday and the evening events kick off at around 8pm.

Every Tuesday from 8pm till 11pm, we see the return of Off Beat! with Kirstie and Kim bringing Reggae, Ska, Dub, Hip-Hop, Soca/Calypso, Two-Tone and Trojan from eras gone past. Entry for this night is free.

Every Wednesday from 8pm till 11pm, DJ Ash returns with Wednesday Lick, playing a wide range of music including Reggae, Rock, Indie, Metal, Pop, New Wave, Chart Hits and all your fave golden oldies. Entry for this night is free and it makes a great pre-club night for Exit 1, brought to you by our friends at Bradford Rio's round the corner.

Every Thursday from 8pm till around 11.30pm we continue with Bad Moon Rising. Loyal stalwart DJ Howard brings you his night of Goth, Alternative, Punk, Post Punk, New Wave, Industrial, EBM and Rock 'n' Roll - one of the greatest regular alternative nights the city has seen for years. Entry is totally free. This recommences 17th December.

Every Friday from 8pm till 11pm, we have The Friday Sound, bringing you a diverse mix of up and coming live talent from the local area as well as up and down the country. We are always on the lookout for new and interesting music to host and we will have anything from extreme metal to electro to acoustic pop. After the bands have finished, we have one of our growing team of versatile alternative DJs, bringing probably the widest mix of music in the city, from the coolest mellow indie pop to the dirtiest grunge and metal and all in the same night. This runs on until 3am and entry is free before 8pm and just £2 after.

Saturday Night Live is our flagship live music night where we bring you the very best talent we can find as well as various specialist music events from all dayers to live / club nights. Again, the night runs from 8pm till 3am and is £2 entry unless otherwise advertised. Normal opening time is 5pm and it is free entry before 8pm (again unless otherwise advertised).

We now have a regular supply of locally sourced real ales. We currently have a selection of bottled ales and a single handpump in the Zuu Bar with a second due to be fitted soon. We are a freehold so if there is a particular ale you would like to see, then just ask and if there is a demand for it, we will have a look at getting it in. We have a huge selection of other drinks, including numerous draught and bottled lagers and ciders as well as an array of spirits for you to get stuck into. We try and keep our prices akin to pub prices where possible, so as to be easy on the pocket all round.

Our new burger bar and tuck shop is now open for business every Friday and Saturday night with a selection of burgers and sandwiches from just £2 and a selection of other snacks. Coming soon also we are planning on stocking cigarettes and will be introducing a chip and pin card facility so you don't have to nip out.

Our management team have also been given the Zuu Bar's sister pub to look after, The Black Swan on Thornton Road. This is a great traditional English pub with various sports and games nights through the week, including the weekly meeting of the Bradford Darts Organisation and music nights every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, with our DJs playing a broad spectrum of sounds. The Black Swan is also the new home of the Bradford Rockers Group where meetings are held on the last Friday of each month. For these nights, everybody is welcome and we are going to be hosting live music. Again, the place is a freehouse and again, we will be serving regular independent cask ales starting with two, then up to four pumps potentially, depending on demand. The prices are good and the atmosphere is great. It is only a stones throw away from both the Zuu Bar and the University area of Bradford and makes an ideal starting point for your night. Sean and Hayley would like to extend a warm welcome to one and all.

This is all just the start of the story. There are some great plans for expansion in the pipeline as well as more club nights, which we are hard at work on behind the scenes. More on that in the new year.

Experience a riotous mix of theatre and music, banter and action, this show is for an audience looking for a world beyond TV Talent Contests and multi-millionaires taking multi-million pound pensions in this winter of recession.

Black Box
This Saturday

Two live performances will be performed in the black box studio after Chumbawamba.

Adherance: A broken, twisted landscape is populated by the members of Bradford Playhouse's new performance troupe pH Neutral. In a fitting year where we wall upon 25 years since 1984 and 20 years since the Berlin wall fell the performers set out on a meditation of control and its context on a social and internal level.

The piece utilises dance, sound, bleeding and body performance to investigate the commoditization of sex and violence, the fetishisation of consumption and the double sided politic of the need for total dominance being a total surrender to primal impulse.

Decay Ends A Decade: Newly founded Brut Mod Records proudly present their first signing, playing vital, heartfelt and immediate electro pop, following in the foot steps of other great Sheffield bands the Human League, ABC and Caberet Voltaire. Kenneth will be performing in the bar, frolicking and spreading positive energies to all and sundry.

Tonight is all about fun, light-heartedness, letting go, friday-feeling let your hair down dancing until the wee hours partying. That's what friday nights should be about.

Expect a mix of 'good' pop, dance and tunes from the 00's, 90's, 80's, 70's and beyond guaranteed to get you on your feet. There'll be free shots for those deemed to come in outrageous fancy dress, and if you haven't there'll be dress-up on the night if you want to give it a go... PLUS party games, Twister, and PIÑATA!

We're also showcasing poetry from the wonderful Bradford poet JANE STEELE. We first met Jane when we heard her talking about how much she loved Bradford and all it has to offer. That comes through in her poetry. She, like us, has big love for this city.

Involuntary Dances

Rita Marcalo is a performance artist who suffers from epilepsy. Having come off her epilepsy medication exactly one month prior to the performance date in order to reduce the level of anticonvulsant medication in her blood stream, Marcalo will spend a period of a total of 24 hours inducing an epileptic seizure. This is the first in a trilogy of works looking at the relationship between dance, epilepsy and drug research.

The Midnight House

The Midnight House is a Ghost Story for Christmas-hopefully very much in the style of the old BBC2 1970's adaptations of the M R James short stories. It's set during the dark days of World War Two at the facility deep in the mountains of Wales where the contents of the National Gallery were kept safe from German bombs, and tells the story of a mysterious events surrounding a strange picture stored in that facility.

The play is being staged as a benefit to support the Bradford Playhouse as part of an ongoing campaign to support this historic theatre.

Tickets are £8 / £6 concessions.

On 5th December this year, there is a whole heap of metal happening in Bradford with tons of live music over 3 venues and a fantastic team of DJs over at least 4 venues.

At The Exchange Alehouse on Market Street they present their annual "Deathfest" - this is an all day marathon of death metal bands with a whopping 9 bands from 11.30am and some of Bradford's finest metal DJs playing inbetween the sets. Entry is absolutely free and customers are advised to arrive early since the event looks set to reach capacity very quickly with people coming from all over the UK and beyond. Facebook Event

Up at The Zuu bar from 5pm there is an "Evening Of Doom" for those of you who like their metal slower paced. There are 3 or 4 bands confirmed at the time of writing, with more in the pipeline. Throughout the day, if you want to take some time out to relax in a chilled environment with background jukebox music and quality beer, the Black Swan on Thornton road will offer a great haven to give those eardrums a rest before choosing your next destination.

For those of you who want to party on until 3am, Bradford Rio's will be playing a wide selection of metal for your ears, providing the perfect end to the day. Entry is free before 11pm and £5 afterwards. You are guaranteed a night of request friendly great music from some of the most experienced rock/metal DJs the city has to offer.

Best of all, these venues are no more than a few minutes walk away from each other, so it is easy to circulate around the area. This looks set to be a great day for metal in Bradford with bands and fans coming from far and wide and there should be something for every metalhead's tastes.

"Just a note to all people in the local music industry to beware of a band called 'Mischievous Night' from Leeds. The band booked a rehearsal at Voltage on Sat 7th November and did a runner without paying. I even loaned mics to them at no extra charge and gave them the biggest room, with nobody directly next door. They didn't speak to me, refused to answer the phone to me (until I withheld my number!) would not reply to a myspace message, then when I did get to speak to Kath the singer, she was very rude, said the room was 'shit' even though members of the band had used the place before (nobody else has complained in my 23 years experience) refused to pay for the session, said they left because they couldn't find me, although I was in the office the whole time, then she rudely hung up the phone mid-sentence.

I've never been so insulted by someone so unprofessional, so be warned."

Friday 13th metal shenanigans

There seems to be a resurgence of metal in Bradford, which has been happening over the past year or so and one of the key players, certainly in the DJ world is Roj Saville. Roj has DJ'd for The Exchange, The Mannville and Leeds Rio's and is now having a go at injecting some credible DJ music to the Gasworks. This Friday night he presents a special edition of his Whiplash night at The Exchange called "Cursed", which will see a doomier edge to the music. This starts around 8 o'clock and carries on until around 11.

After he has finished at The Exchange, Roj will be hightailing it up the hill to The Gasworks to present the first one of his Metal 4 Life nights. This will certainly see a change to the musical format of the club, at least for one night. Whether the owners see fit to keep it going is another thing but for this night anyway, you can expect to hear all things metal. The DJ usually starts after midnight when the bands have finished.

Meanwhile up at Bradford Rio's, the Jagerclub is taking place, bringing you a huge selection of metal and more besides. Here you will find two rooms of great music from 10pm until 3.30am. Jagerclub has been going in Leeds for quite some time now and Rio's are seasoned professionals in bringing you the very best rock club nights. Your DJs for this are Dean, Paul and Hollie Robson "DJ Poprocks", who is going from strength to strength now she has the freedom to express herself more with the music she plays. The Jagerclub is a fantastic night!

Up at The New Beehive that night is The Great Northern Trendkill, which will be offering live metal that night with bands "Sons Of Merrick" and "eySaw" as well as DJ till midnight. As the name would suggest and the poster indicates, this edition of TGNT is influenced by the music of Pantera and Dimebag Darrell, so if Southern rock is your sound, then this is the place to be!

Darren Hayman and The Secondary Modern play Theatre in the Mill, University of Bradford

As part of his ‘We love the Industrial Cities Tour’ Darren Hayman (ex-Hefner front-man) will be playing The Theatre in the Mill on Saturday 14th November at 8pm with his new 5-piece band The Secondary Modern. Expect music from his solo records, a smattering of Hefner songs and, no doubt, some box-fresh new material.

From 1996 to 2001 Darren Hayman teetered on the brink of indie stardom as frontman of Hefner, the frequently brilliant bedsit indie-pop band that lit up a thousand love-torn student bedrooms. After Hefner disbanded at the end of 2001, Hayman continued ‘quietly approaching national treasure status’ (The Sunday Times) with the release solo records and side projects.

The last two Darren Hayman releases have been 'Songs for Harmonium and Drum Machine' and 'Pram Town', a glorious album set in the 1950s New Town of Harlow that could stand as his finest achievement to date. Word magazine described it as "gorgeous" and Q as "heartbreaking". Plan B magazine commented "these 50 minutes of bittersweet prettiness are a delight...it utterly charms...nearly has me in tears."

Bright, accessible, sharp and folky, Darren's band featured banjo, piano, violin and brass providing a fitting support for his increasingly English eccentric mode of writing.

This is self explanatory - a person from the local music scene is asked 5 questions, like a mini interview. If there is anyone who you would like to see featured, could be a band member, promoter, landlord, DJ, whatever then let me know and I will see about getting them included. Additionally, if you have a specific question for the guest, then send it in and I will pick 5 from the list. This will be a monthly feature and each time, the interview takes place and next month's guest is announced so as to give you chance to get those questions in.

Rafters on the lookout for live bands

Following a busy few months after reopening and setting up the venue, Rafters are on the lookout for live bands to play every Saturday night. Any style will be considered but they are trying to stay away from the more rock and metal end of the spectrum.

Rafters is a music / arts bar located on Little Horton Lane, just round the corner from the University and a short walk from the Polish Parish Club. Often overlooked because it is kind of tucked out of the way, this great little venue is one of the city's best kept secrets. Providing a haven for many of Bradford's seasoned musicians and artists, Rafters is a veritable hotbed of local culture.

Following the impending closure of the Mannville Arms this coming Sunday, 1st November. The current Mannville team have already secured a new home. Commencing the following Friday, 6th November the Mannville team, events calender and infrastructure will be transferred to The Zuu Bar, which is located on the block of Barry Street - Sunbridge Road - Sackville Street, less than a minute's walk from the brand new Bradford Rio's club. Final details are still being ironed out but every attempt will be made to transfer as many events as possible across. The format will essentially remain the same and there are opportunities to develop things further which we will be discussing in the coming months. All MySpace, website information and Facebook group details will be amended over the coming week or so. Michael, Billy and the rest of the team would like to cordially invite you all to the opening of the new venue on Friday, 6th November where Brand New Analogues will hopefully be kicking off the proceedings in fine style as advertised.

The Mannville Arms closing date confirmed as 1st November

The Mannville Arms as we know and love it will trade for the last time this Sunday (1st November). Today, brothers Michael and Billy Dunn were informed by their solicitor that they would have to leave the premises by mid next week as originally stated by their area manager. This will therefore make the last big gig the Halloween Chorus Of Ruin one. The team would like to profusely apologise to all of the bands who had been booked to play after that date but the matter has been taken beyond their control. The brothers are hoping to continue the legacy at another venue with the same staff, hopefully before Christmas so it is possible that at least some of the bookings can be transferred over.

Local cult doom metal band Chorus Of Ruin come out of retirement for a special one-off appearance

This Saturday night, it is Halloween and The Mannville Arms will be celebrating it by hosting a one-off performance by 1990's Bradford doom metal merchants Chorus Of Ruin. Chorus Of Ruin was originally formed in late 1990 under the moniker of Sorrow and after the name change in 1991 to Chorus Of Ruin, a number of line-up changes and releases ensued and the band gained a cult underground following. Their contemporaries at the time were the likes of Paradise Lost, Anathema and My Dying Bride, in fact founder member Phil Kirk was the vocalist for a previous incarnation of MDB.

As their contemporaries elevated their way to the underground metal premiership, Chorus had faded into obscurity by 1994 when they decided to call it a day. Arguably their most well known song "Headstone" which was included on the much lauded underground compilation CD "Deaf Metal Sampler" was subsequently covered by Netherlands metal outfit Officium Triste, who are also playing on the bill.

Chorus Of Ruin have come out of retirement for this special gig, consisting of a mixture of their various line-ups from over the years. they have been rehearsing hard and according to reports are sounding great.

Opening the proceedings are popular local screamo metal band OpenFire, bringing a more contemporary sound to the evening with some very impressive musicianship to boot.

The resident DJs will be playing all the best in quality metal in and amongst.

This night is going to be very special and as with all Mannville Arms events, will be absolutely free. Customers are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment since this event is looking likely that it will reach capacity. Chorus Of Ruin were a very popular band in the hey day of the Bradford metal scene and it is anticipated that a lot of old faces will be coming out of the woodwork for this one. The night starts at 8pm but the venue will be open throughout the day from 2pm.

The sound and lighting for the evening will be provided by Bradford Rio's, who will also be hosting an after show party at their brand new club on Barry Street.

Bradford Rio's confirm opening date of Friday 30th October

Bradford Rio's have finally confimed an opening date for the new club. The date will be Friday 30th October - 3 weeks later than the initial proposed 9th October. The project hit a delay during the planning stage due to unfortunate timings of solicitors being unavailable. Ziggy and the team have been frustrated by this and do appreciate that many people planned to attend on the 9th. they would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Tickets for the opening night are priced at £5 and go on sale this evening. They are available from behind the bar at The Mannville Arms and over the telephone on 0844 4142182. The new premises is smaller than the old Thorn House venue so customers are advised to purchase a ticket before the event and get in quick as they are likely to sell out. Further details of what regular events are to take place at the club can be found on the Bradford Rio's website.

Scottish & Newcastle disgrace with local iconic venue

On Monday 19th October, leaseholders of The Mannville Arms, Michael and Billy Dunn received a telephone call from the local area manager of Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises, a subsiduary of Heineken - the company who own the pub, informing them that the company wishes them to move out of the premises in just two and a half weeks. They stated that they were unhappy with their business model and they don't believe that they have been looking after the place properly. It later came to light that they had found a replacement tennant and were trying to oust Michael and Billy vastly prematurely of their lease renewal, which is due in February. The brothers are currently seeking legal advice and as far as the pub goes, it should be regarded as business as usual until things are ironed out.

The Mannville Arms, previously known as The Head pub was a very quiet, lifeless place in 2007 when the brothers moved in. It was post smoking ban and college students had been actively discouraged from using the place due to the bad reputation of the "The Head" name.

It had been 12 years since the pub had been last called The Mannville Arms - a place which was steeped in local cultural history. Many of Bradford's musicians and music fans met and drank in the place in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's until in 1995 Tetley Brewery decided to close it, probably when it was at the very peak of its poularity and reopen it as one of their "Scruffy Murphy's" chain. Despite a 1200+ signature petition from their loyal and passionate customer base, the brewery took no notice and proceeded with their plans regardless. Needless to say that it was never as popular again. Scruffy Murphy's was bought out by Scottish and Newcastle and the pub was subsequently renamed "The Head", initially turning into a generic student bar and subsequently degrading to a fairly rough place where not many people wanted to go.

Michael and Billy Dunn stepped forward and invested in the lease of the place in late summer 2007, just after the smoking ban. After a considerable amount of effort injected by them and a team of loyal customers and staff who invested a lot of time and love into the place, The Mannville Arms of old was finally back. I myself have been involved for the past two years, initially as a DJ and then on the promotions side, the latter of which I have done free of charge in an effort to boost business. The global recession hit and despite initial struggles, the business actually started to grow. During this time, the brewery not only did not help with fundamental responsibilities toward the building including health and safety but they also increased their financial pressure on the business every time it got ahead and were also unreliable with deliveries. The Mannville Arms is one of the city's iconic small venues and has played host to bands from all walks of life and from all corners of the country. They have even played host to bands from as far away as Spain and Sweden, always running the place as ethically as possible, never charging a door fee and always paying the bands wherever possible whilst providing a PA, soundman and security. Priding itself on its open-mindedness, they have always encouraged original material bands and given anybody a chance to play. The Mannville has also played host to various initiatives with the music college and also jam sessions which have given a number of young musicians their first experiences of playing live.

The Mannville has also played host to various charity events, raising hundreds of pounds for local charities whilst still not charging a door fee.

They have always encouraged rather than discouraged people to advertise their own local events even if they are hosted at other places, giving other local businesses assistance and never asked for anything in return and always been happy to stock local publications, becoming a hub for the local alternative music scene.

The crime figures for The Mannville are unusually low for a city centre pub and there is generally zero trouble, The staff operate a zero tolerance policy to obviously underage drinking, drugs and violence of any kind. The younger customers have learned how to behave socially and drink responsibly by mixing with people from all age groups. There is no prejudice and there is always a warm, safe and friendly atmosphere.

In short, this is arguably the most socially important venue in Bradford for local music and also the city's most prominent ambassador with requests for gigs coming from far and wide on a very regular basis. It has and still is increasing in popularity with band and customer alike.

If I was an area manager at the brewery I would be proud to have a place like this in my portfolio. Hailing from Huddersfield, Harlem Gem are Richmond Quarshie (Richy Gem) and Lloyd Charles (Lloydie Gem). Richy is the gifted songwriter, arranger, musician and producer, whilst Lloydie provides the distinctive lead vocals.The two met whilst working on various projects, but didn't become a firm partnership until 1989.
